Tips for Academic Success

College can be a challenging time. Many students are transitioning from teenager to adult, making new friends, preparing for their future careers, and experiencing a brand new sense of independence. Needless to say, keeping one's grades up can sometimes be an afterthought.

With the Summer term beginning today at the University of Southern Mississippi, we thought it would be a good opportunity to share some tips for academic success.
  1. Make your education meaningful by setting academic and personal goals that matter to you. What do you want to accomplish?
  2. Learn actively by thinking about what you are reading or hearing in class and seeking to connect new information with things you already know. 
  3. Establish a study schedule (for every hour spent in class, students should typically spend 2 hours of their own time studying the material). 
  4. Use your campus resources (Southern Miss students should see 
  5. Learn to manage your time effectively (make a schedule and use it, avoid distractions, learn to say no). 
  6. Develop strong reading, listening, writing, and note-taking skills. 
  7. Don't be afraid to ask for help, and do not wait until it is too late to do so.
  8. Learn stress management and coping skills (journaling, relaxation, exercise, hobbies).
